After a winter break, one of the most charming and photogenic gardens in the capital has reopened – the garden of Černín Palace (Černínská zahrada). This is an ideal secret spot for those who want to hide from the tourist noise of Hradčany Square, take shelter in the shade of old trees, and touch the baroque history of the city.
Throughout the warm season, from May to September, you can enter this unique palace and park complex absolutely for free, every Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
The construction of the garden at the magnificent Černín Palace began in 1693 according to the designs of the famous architect Francesco Caratti, who laid the strict principles of baroque symmetry at the foundation of the project. Over three centuries, this place has had to endure many dark times: the park was seriously damaged during the siege of Prague, and in the 19th century, the entire complex was barbarically converted into army barracks.
The garden received its second birth only in the 1930s thanks to a large-scale reconstruction by architects Pavel Janák and Otakar Firlinger. Today, the space is divided into two contrasting but harmonious zones:
French formal garden. Located between the palace and the summer pavilion. Here you will find a neat pool with a fountain and yew trees perfectly trimmed into domes and spheres – an ideal space for a leisurely rest.
English landscape park. The second part of the garden is designed in the freer, natural forms of traditional English gardens, which are conducive to secluded walks.
