About the Essentials

What is a datová schránka (data box) and why is it dangerous if you don't log in?

A datová schránka is an official electronic mailbox for correspondence with the state. Anything that arrives in it is legally equivalent to a paper letter: decisions, summons, fines. Activation is free — online via Identita občana (citizen identity), at Czech POINT, or in writing.

There are two mechanisms that often cause problems. The first (§10, para. 2): the mailbox activates itself on the 15th day after the login letter is delivered — even if the envelope remains unopened. The second (§17, para. 4): a presumption of delivery applies — 10 days from the date of delivery; if you didn't log in, didn't read it, didn't know — the document is still considered served.

Combine them: about 25 days after the login is sent, the document is legally served to you, even if you've never seen it. And the deadlines for appeals start running during this time. This is how people miss appeals they didn't even know existed.

The conclusion is simple: if you have a datová schránka — log in regularly, not 'when you have time'. From 06/25–26/2026, the datová schránka will operate on the datovka.gov.cz domain; the old mojedatovaschranka.cz will redirect from 08/27/2026.

Who is required to have a datová schránka and what changes when opening a živnosť (sole-trader licence)?

If you are a natural person without a business — a datová schránka is not mandatory for you. The plan to automatically issue mailboxes to everyone was canceled by law 457/2022 Sb. before it even took effect. If you want one — get it voluntarily; if not — the state will continue to send you paper mail.

However, as soon as you open a živnosť and receive an IČO (company ID number), you become an OSVČ (self-employed person) — and a datová schránka is created for you automatically and is mandatory (the rule applies from 01/01/2023). Along with it comes the obligation to file tax returns only electronically. This is not an option and you 'cannot refuse': if you have an IČO — you have a datová schránka.

This leads to a typical situation: a person opens a živnosť, a mailbox is created for them, the login letter gets lost during a move — and after about 25 days, everything sent there is considered delivered. Check the address your mail is sent to before registering.

And another recent change: from 08/01/2026, logging into the Portál občana (citizen portal) via datová schránka will cease — only Identita občana will remain. If you used to log into the portal via datová schránka, get Identita občana in advance. Details about business itself — in the Business section.

What can be done at Czech POINT and how much does it cost?

Czech POINT is a universal state service point: post offices, municipal offices, notaries, the Chamber of Commerce. The network is large: 7,211 contact points in the Czech Republic plus 75 abroad, so the nearest one is usually close by. The current list of services and prices is on czechpoint.gov.cz.

Prices are fixed: výpis z rejstříku trestů (extract from the criminal register) — 100 CZK (this is the legal rate, you cannot get a discount, no matter how much you ask); autorizovaná konverze (authorized conversion) — 30 CZK per page; eLegalizace — 50 CZK per signature; výpis z katastru nemovitostí (extract from the real estate cadastre) — 100 CZK for the first page and 50 CZK for each subsequent page; zprostředkovaná identifikace (mediated identification) — 200 CZK.

It's also important to know the main thing: all operations with datová schránka at Czech POINT are free. Activation, re-issuing access, unlocking — free. If they ask you for money specifically for the datová schránka, it's a mistake, and you should calmly point it out.

How to register an address and what happens if you are late?

There is no single deadline — it depends on your status, and this is where most confusion occurs. For dočasná ochrana (temporary protection): 3 working days if you will stay at the new address for more than 15 days; apply at the Ministry of Interior or KACPU, fee — 0 CZK. For a visa over 90 days and dlouhodobý pobyt (long-term residence): 30 calendar days if the change is longer than 30 days (§98(3)). For a pobytová karta (residence card) and EU citizens with permanent residence: 30 working days if the change is longer than 180 days (§98(1)). A Czech citizen goes to the ohlašovna (registry office), there is no legal deadline for them, fee — 50 CZK.

After entering the country, a separate rule applies: 3 working days for third-country nationals (§93). However, those for whom the registration is done by the ubytovatel (accommodation provider) are exempt — if you live in a hotel, dormitory, or with a landlord for a fee, you don't go to the police yourself. Clarify with the owner if they have submitted the data; if not — the obligation is yours.

The fine for violating §93 or §98 for a natural person is up to 3,000 CZK (§156; §157 concerns legal entities, so the figures from there do not apply to you). You can check your actual address in the registru obyvatel (resident registry) yourself via the Portál občana — the fastest way to see what the state thinks about you.

Is it true that they can revoke a residence permit for three offenses?

Yes, from 01/01/2026, this is indeed a new rule: three offenses (přestupky) in 12 months — and the residence permit can be revoked or not extended. Legal basis — law no. 314/2025 Sb.

The key is who it applies to. It applies to the zvláštní dlouhodobý pobyt (ZDP - special long-term residence permit) and other types of residence permits. It does not apply to dočasná ochrana (temporary protection), trvalý pobyt (permanent residence), and EU citizens. This means that switching to ZDP brings not only advantages: along with stability, you also take on this risk, which you did not have with DO (temporary protection).

Traffic violations are not included in this count. What exactly falls under the rule and in what order — is a matter of practical application, so check the official portal ipc.gov.cz. Details about the statuses themselves and an honest comparison between DO and ZDP are discussed in the Legalization section.

Why wasn't I given a rodné číslo (personal identification number) and what should I enter instead?

This is not a mistake and not your fault: holders of temporary protection and special long-term residence are not assigned a personal identification number (rodné číslo) at all – this is stated directly in §7v of Act 65/2022 Coll. Waiting for it, going to "clarify," or looking for a way to get it is pointless: it won't happen.

Instead, the health insurance company assigns a substitute insurance number (číslo pojištěnce). This is what you write where the form asks for a personal identification number (rodné číslo): at the doctor's, at the pharmacy, on government and private forms. Your insurance company issues it – any questions about the number itself are resolved with them.

Be prepared to explain: many institutions and services are used to everyone having a personal identification number (rodné číslo) and will be genuinely surprised. Referring to §7v of Act 65/2022 Coll. usually resolves the issue in a minute.

How to book an appointment at OAMP and when will the card actually be ready?

First about the domain: frs.gov.cz is no longer a portal – it redirects 301 to ipc.gov.cz (since 01.07.2023). Old links and screenshots from communities lead nowhere, rely only on ipc.gov.cz. You cannot come without an appointment – this is a requirement, not a "you can try." Customer center: +420 974 801 801, Mon–Thu 8 AM–4 PM, Fri 8 AM–2 PM.

Appointment rules: you can book from age 15; a verified account (NIA or BankID) allows up to 3 active appointments for 60 days, an unverified one – one. You must cancel no later than 48 hours in advance. More than 10 cancellations in 90 days – a 90-day block; 3 no-shows in 180 days – a 180-day block. This means "I'll book a few dates just in case" is a direct path to being blocked.

Biometrics – face and fingerprints (children under 6 are exempt). Key figure: you have 60 days to receive the card from the day biometrics are taken (§117d), not from the day the card was produced. The production time itself is not officially regulated – "14 days" or "a month" is folklore from communities, not a rule.

And a separate trap: the card is issued by the alien police (cizinecká policie), not OAMP. These are two different departments with two different appointment portals – rezervace.policie.gov.cz for the police and ipc.gov.cz for OAMP. If you book the wrong one, you'll travel in vain.
