Dovolená

annual leave

What does “Dovolená” mean in Czechia?

Dovolená — annual paid leave. The legal minimum is 4 weeks, which is 160 hours for a 40-hour work week. In the public sector, it is 5 weeks, and for teachers, it is 8.

Leave is Calculated in Hours

Since 01/01/2021, leave has been calculated in hours, not days. This is not just a formality: with uneven work schedules, a "day" is no longer a unit of measurement. 160 hours for someone working 12-hour shifts is not the same as 20 shifts. Check your payslip for the exact number of hours.

Leave for Agreements (Dohody)

Since 01/01/2024, people working on DPP (agreement on work activity) or DPČ (agreement on work performance) also have leave. There are two conditions:

  • the agreement lasted at least 4 weeks;
  • at least 80 hours were worked.

This is a relatively new rule, and some employees and employers still do not know about it.

Important. If you work on a "dohoda" (agreement) for more than 4 weeks and have worked over 80 hours, you are entitled to vacation from 01.01.2024. Both sides often do not know this, so you have to ask yourself.
