Dlouhodobé ošetřovné

long-term care benefit for a seriously ill person

What does “Dlouhodobé ošetřovné” mean in Czechia?

Long-term care allowance — a separate, longer payment from sickness insurance for caring for a seriously ill family member. Do not confuse with the usual ošetřovné for 9 days.

Conditions

  • hospitalization ≥ 4 days (exception: incurable condition + palliative care — hospitalization is not needed)
  • need for full-time care ≥ 30 days
  • written consent of the person being cared for

How much

  • maximum 90 days
  • 60% of DVZ (daily assessment base)

Difference from usual ošetřovné

For long-term care allowance, a DPP (agreement on work performance) does not grant rights — although it does for the usual ošetřovné (from 2025, if participating in insurance).

Important. Written consent from the person being cared for is a required condition, not just a formality. And remember the asymmetry: a DPP (agreement on work performance) gives the right to short-term sick pay (ošetřovné), but not to long-term sick pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is hospitalization needed?
Yes, at least 4 days. The exception is an incurable condition with palliative care: then hospitalization is not needed.
Can an employee have a DPP?
No. DPP (agreement on work performance) does not grant the right to long-term care allowance, unlike regular care allowance.
