Povinné předškolní vzdělávání

mandatory pre-school education

What does “Povinné předškolní vzdělávání” mean in Czechia?

Mandatory Preschool Education — the mandatory last year of preschool education before starting elementary school, from age 5.

Who it concerns for 2026/2027

  • children born 09/01/2020 – 08/31/2021
  • including Ukrainian children with temporary protection or ZDP (long-term residence permit) — § 1 Lex Ukrajina

Money

This year is free. For other years, there is a fee in kindergarten, but the director can lower it or remove it completely — including for humanitarian reasons.

Postponement

Requests to postpone school attendance must be submitted in writing to the director from April 1 to April 30.

Important. This is not a recommendation, but a duty — and it applies to children with temporary protection and ZDP (children with long-term residence permit) the same as to Czech children. "We are here temporarily, we will leave next year" is not a valid reason.
