What does “Ubytovatel” mean in Czechia?

Ubytovatel (accommodation provider) is someone who gives you a place to live for money: a hotel, ubytovna (hostel), landlord. The main job of the ubytovatel is to register your address.

Registration after arrival

Citizens from third countries must register their place of stay within 3 working days (§ 93 of Act 326/1999 Coll.).
🔑 Those for whom the ubytovatel has registered are exempt. If you live in a hotel, dormitory, or with a landlord for money, you do not need to go to the police yourself.
Fine for a natural person for violating § 93 / § 98 — up to 3,000 CZK (§ 156).

Important. The accommodation provider keeps your address — and the address keeps your temporary protection. Check yourself in the resident register through the Citizen's Portal yourself: nobody will send you a warning about the 90-day countdown starting.

Do I need to go to the police myself if I have been accommodated?

If you live in a hotel, dormitory, or with a landlord for a fee, the accommodation provider makes the registration, and you are exempt from the duty under § 93. In other cases, the deadline is 3 working days. The fine for violation is up to 3,000 CZK.

What happens if the accommodation provider de-registers me?

The Ministry of Interior (MVSR) can cancel an address and assign an OAMP address. After 90 days at the office address, temporary protection ends automatically – without a decision and without notice. This is not an abstract risk, but the most common way to lose your status.
