postponement of the start of school attendance

What does “Odklad” mean in Czechia?

Odklad (postponement of compulsory school attendance) — delaying the start of compulsory school attendance by one year.

How to ask

  • in writing to the school principal
  • timeframe — from April 1 to April 30

What odklad does NOT do

Odklad is not a way to "wait out" Czech school: povinná školní docházka (compulsory school attendance) remains mandatory, and online learning in a Ukrainian school does not replace it. Odklad only shifts the start by one year — for a child who is not yet ready.

Language support instead of postponement

Children with dočasná ochrana (temporary protection) are entitled to jazyková příprava (language preparation) — up to 400 hours per year for free, systematically, directly in schools. The language barrier is often solved by this.

Important. Application window — from April 1 to 30, in writing to the director. Postponement does not exempt from compulsory school attendance, it only moves the start by one year.
