Číslo pojištěnce

insured person number

What does “Číslo pojištěnce” mean in Czechia?

Číslo pojištěnce — the insurance number assigned by the health insurance company. For Ukrainians with temporary protection or special long-term residence, this is a **substitute for a birth number**: they are not assigned a birth number at all (§ 7v of Act No. 65/2022 Coll.), so the insurance number becomes the main identifier in the system.

Who pays your contributions

The state pays contributions for only **90 days** from the granting of temporary protection — and this is for persons aged 18–64. Children under 18 and persons 65+ remain covered by the state indefinitely. After 90 days, you must inform the insurance company yourself who is paying: the employer, you as an OSVČ (Czech self-employed status), a privileged category (students, registered at the Labor Office, caring for a young child, unable to work — with documents) or yourself as **OBZP (person without own income) for 3,024 CZK per month** by the 8th day of the following month.

You have **8 days** to inform the insurance company about the change of payer.

Changing insurance company

  • you can change once every **12 months**, and only from January 1st or July 1st;
  • submit the application no later than 3 months before: by **March 31st** (change from July 1st) or by **September 30th** (change from January 1st);
  • inform your employer within 8 days and return your old card.
Important. Coverage by the insurance number is full public insurance, the same as for Czechs, not "only emergency care." Confusion here costs people doctor visits they were fully entitled to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a policy number and a personal identification number?
Rodné číslo — a state-wide identifier, and owners of DO and ZDP are not assigned one by law. The insurance number is assigned by the insurer itself as a replacement so you can use the system.
How much do I have to pay myself if nobody pays for me?
As OBZP (self-paid person without other income) — 3,024 CZK per month (2026), by the 8th day of the next month. But first, check the special categories: students, registered at the ÚP (Labor Office), caring for a young child.
