Domovní kniha

book of residents at the accommodation provider

What does “Domovní kniha” mean in Czechia?

Domovní kniha (house book) is a record of people to whom the ubytovatel (accommodation provider) has given housing: who lives at the address, from what date, and until what date. Keeping this record is the responsibility of the accommodation provider, not the resident.

Why it's not just a piece of paper

A record with the accommodation provider is where your registered address comes from. It is connected to:

  • fulfilling the registration duty under § 93 (3 working days for third-country nationals) — the accommodation provider does it for you;
  • 🔴 the fact that you are listed at a real address, not at the OAMP address.

🔴 The chain that breaks your status

The accommodation provider did not register you / deregister you, or the police did not find you at the address → the Ministry of Interior cancels the address → assigns the OAMP address → after 90 days, temporary protection ends by law, without a decision and without notification.

Important. Do not expect that the accounting of the accommodation provider is kept accurately "by default." Ask for written confirmation of registration and check your address in the registru obyvatel (resident register) through the Portál občana (Citizen's Portal) — this is the only way to find out about a problem in time.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to keep the house book myself?
No, this is the duty of the ubytovateľ (accommodation provider) — the person who provides housing for a fee. Your part is to make sure that you are really registered there and that your address is correct in the register of inhabitants.
Why should I care about the ubytovateľ (accommodation provider) registry?
Because your registered address grows from it. If you are removed from the records, the Ministry of Interior (MVS) can cancel the address and assign an OAMP address. After 90 days, this automatically ends temporary protection.
