Občanský průkaz

internal identity card of a Czech citizen

What does “Občanský průkaz” mean in Czechia?

Občanský průkaz (Czech national ID card) — an internal identity document for citizens of the Czech Republic. For Ukrainians, it is mainly relevant because of what it does not give you: you will not be issued an občanský průkaz with temporary protection or special long-term residence.

What you have instead

  • a passport with a vízový štítek (visa sticker);
  • pobytová karta (residence card) — a biometric card issued by the cizinecká policie (foreign police);
  • a číslo pojištěnce (insurance number) from your insurance company instead of a rodné číslo (birth number), which is not assigned at all to holders of DO and ZDP (§ 7v of Act No. 65/2022 Coll.).

When an občanský průkaz will be yours

Only when you get citizenship, and this is a long process (Act No. 186/2013 Coll.):

  • 5 years of continuous trvalý pobyt (permanent residence) for citizens of third countries;
  • Czech language B1 (3,700 CZK) plus a test of Czech realities (2,000 CZK) — a total of 5,700 CZK. Realities: 30 questions, 30 minutes, a passing score of at least 18 out of 30, from a bank of 300 public tasks;
  • proof of income for 3 years and zero tax debt;
  • a fee of 2,000 CZK, decision time 180 days;
  • exempt from exams: persons under 15 and over 65 years old, as well as those who studied in Czech for at least 3 years.
Important. Do not search for how to get an občanský průkaz (Czech identity card) with temporary protection — it is only issued to Czech citizens. Your legal document is a pobytová karta (residence card) or a passport with a visa stamp, and you must use these on applications.
