Identita občana

national electronic identification

What does “Identita občana” mean in Czechia?

Identita občana (Citizen's Identity) — this is a national system for electronic identification. You use it to log into government portals. It is not a separate service, but a key: you create one identity once and then use it everywhere.

Why you need it

  • Portál občana (Citizen's Portal) — from 08/01/2026, logging in through the datová schránka (data box) will stop. Only Identita občana will be available. If you used to log in "through the data box," you will need to set it up again.
  • Datová schránka (Data box) — you can activate it online using Identita občana, for free.
  • Zápis v OAMP (Appointment at the Office for Foreigners' Police) — a verified account (through NIA or BankID) allows up to 3 active appointments for 60 days. An unverified account allows only one. This is a big difference when you need to make appointments for several family members.
  • Úřad práce (Labour Office) — online registration through the Jenda portal (jenda.mpsv.cz) uses Identita občana.
Important. Account verification through NIA or BankID is not just a formality: it is what raises the limit of entries in OAMP from one to three for 60 days. Do it in advance, not when you urgently need an entry.
